Week 7

Not too long ago I loaned an interesting book called
"Visual Design Concepts for Mobile Games" by Christopher Carman. I did not have very high expectations for this book, which seems to be something I say a lot in this blog, but it surprised me, not really in what it had to say but how it worked more like a book for school. After each chapter there are a list of different claims which you can answer yes or no to based on the knowledge you acquired from that chapter. On top of this each chapter has homework for you to do in order for you to learn how to make an isometric game, which is the main topic of this book.
At first I ignored the homework and read through the book until I realized that, hey,
this could be a great blog post. So I did most of the homework with a little twist
I learned by another artist.

Homework Part 1

                Initial sketches and mood

I followed a guide by an artist who was in Finland to teach prop design and did mood and character chart listing important adjectives that I could go back to when looking at the design I ended up with. I also did a silhouette of the design I liked and adjusted the proportions a bit more to my liking. The mood images here I ended up using in the background and the mood of the isometric game rather than the character itself. For that I took colors from animals that are hunted like reindeer, squirrel or elk.
In the book it also mentions making a moodboard for yourself when designing your elements.

Color explorations and isometric view sketches

Next part is to do Two characters in isometric view, one large element, four small elements and from those one is destructible and one harvestable.

  1. The book sounds interesting and it seems it has some excellent exercises. Also, I like your character design sketches.
