Week 1

Each post to this blog will probably differ from each other each week. My goal would be to make a post of an artist each week, discussing their work and what drew me into it and trying to mimic a certain aspect in them, but for now I will be writing about my current thoughts on my media consumption. I consider my media consumption to be quite average. I use social media sites, facebook, instagram and artstation. I see advertisements all around me, online or in real life. All the foods I consume have branding. One thing I do not do is watch television which the older generation seems to do a lot more, but I do make up for it by being on the computer and watching things there. (Maybe not as religiously as my grandma who watches Strum der liebe every day at 4 pm.)

Media is all around us, so not seeing any media is quite tough. That advertisement? Media. Your crisps bag logo? Also media. Media is all around us affecting us all the time. Basic marketing is "about persuasion: creating the impression you want to make, eliciting a specific feeling or response, and then enticing a person to take action". Sometimes you buy things because the marketing has convinced you it is something you need or tries to trick you into thinking it is cheaper. Sometimes something that is 'on sale' is not the cheapest you can find of that product but seeing a big red 'sale' sticker can trick you into thinking that a) it is cheapest and b) it is limited time so it is now or never. I personally have fallen for this trick before but try to look at other options nowadays unless it is something completely unique.

I consume media often times for entertainment. To not be bored or to give myself something to distract from my own thoughts or what is happening around me. Sometimes I put music on while I don't do anything in order to stop my brain from thinking but most often I use it for entertainment or work purposes.

Nothing I did for this post but here is a magpie I did for this week's class assignment

  1. I think it's cool that you've chosen to keep your options open to what you'll write about each week! It gives that freedom to be influenced by something new each time, you never know when or where inspiration will hit. Also, I think it was interesting that you touched on the capitalistic side of media and how advertisements influence us a lot (that could make for a very informative post, if solely focused on that).

I'd suggest re-checking the fonts before posting, since they jump a little bit in this; but otherwise I'm excited to see future posts from you!
